Uncovering High-z Clusters Using Wide-Angle Tailed Radio Sources
نویسنده
چکیده
The morphologies of wide-angle tailed (WAT) radio sources (edge-darkened, C-shaped, FR I radio sources) are the result of confinement and distortion of the radio lobes by the dense X-ray-emitting gas in clusters or groups of galaxies. These radio sources are easily seen at high redshifts (z ∼ 1) in short-exposure images from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm (FIRST) survey. Using a sample of approximately 400 WAT sources from the FIRST survey, we have discovered a number of high-z clusters. Here, we present the highestz cluster found so far using this method: 1137+3000 at z = 0.96. We include photometric and spectroscopic results. Ten galaxies are confirmed at the cluster redshift, with a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of σ = 530+190 −90 km s −1, typical of an Abell richness class 0 cluster.

Discovery of a High-Redshift (z=0.96) Cluster of Galaxies Using a FIRST Wide-Angle Tailed Radio Source
Using a combination of near-infrared and optical photometry, along with multiobject spectroscopy, we have confirmed the existence of a high-redshift cluster of galxies at z = 0.96. The cluster was found using a wide-angle tailed radio source selected from the VLA FIRST survey as a cluster signpost. These types of radio sources are often found in clusters, and are thought to attain their C-shape...
متن کامل4 v 1 3 0 Se p 19 97 DIFFUSE RADIO EMISSION IN THE COMA CLUSTER
The Coma cluster is peculiar in the radio domain owing to the presence of cluster-wide diffuse sources: the radio halo Coma C, the relic source 1253+275, and the bridge between them. Diffuse radio sources in clusters are a rare and poorly understood phenomenon. We summarize here the properties of the diffuse radio sources in Coma and their relation to other cluster properties. 1 Radio emission ...
متن کاملFIRST Bent-Double Radio Sources: Tracers of High-Redshift Clusters
Bent-double radio sources can act as tracers for clusters of galaxies. We present imaging and spectroscopic observations of the environments surrounding ten of these sources (most of them Wide Angle Tails (WATs)) selected from the VLA FIRST survey. Our results reveal a previously unknown cluster associated with eight of the radio sources with redshifts in the range 0.33 < z < 0.85; furthermore,...
متن کاملTailed radio galaxies as tracers of galaxy clusters. Serendipitous discoveries with the GMRT
Aims. We report on the discovery of four new radio galaxies with tailed morphology. Tailed radio galaxies are generally found in rich environments, therefore their presence can be used as tracer of a cluster. Methods. The radio galaxies were found in the fields of Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations carried out at 610 MHz and 327 MHz devoted to other studies. We inspected the li...
متن کاملMagnetic Fields in Cluster Cores: Faraday Rotation in A400 and A2634
We present Faraday rotation data for radio sources in the centers of the Abell clusters A400 and A2634. These clusters contain large ( > ∼ 100kpc), tailed radio sources, each attached to the central cD galaxy. These clusters do not have strong cooling cores. Our data extend previous work on rotation measure in cluster centers to larger scales and non-cooling clusters. The rotation measure, and ...
